The La Jolla Center for Pacific Strategy (“the Center,” “we,” “us”) respects your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect through thelajollacenter.org, how we use it, and your choices.

Information We Collect

Information you provide directly:

• When you apply for Membership, submit a Fellowship/Internship/Staff application, or contact us, we collect the information you provide — name, email, phone, mailing address, professional/academic background, letters of recommendation, and similar application materials.
• When you donate through our Give page, our payment processor (Givebutter) collects payment and contact information necessary to process your gift. We do not directly handle or store your payment card information — that’s held by Givebutter and its payment processor.
• When you buy a ticket to a Center event, Eventbrite collects the information needed to process your order. Eventbrite shares your registration details with us as the event organizer.
• When you sign up for our newsletter or for notice of new opportunities, we collect your contact information and any details you choose to share, such as your interests and background.
• When you subscribe to Center research by email, the sign-up form is provided by Substack, which collects your email address and sends you the emails.

Information collected automatically:

• If you accept analytics cookies, we use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use this site — information like IP address, browser and device type, and pages visited. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser.
• If you accept advertising cookies, we also use the Meta Pixel. It sends Meta the pages you view on this site, your clicks on ticket buttons, your IP address, your browser and device information, and a cookie identifier. See Cookies and Advertising below.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

• Process Membership and Opportunities applications
• Process donations and send donation receipts
• Contact donors and potential donors about giving opportunities
• Respond to inquiries submitted through our Contact page
• Maintain our public Membership Directory (name, tier, and member-since year only — see below)
• Communicate with Members, Fellows, and applicants about Center activities
• Send our newsletter and notice of new opportunities to people who sign up
• If you accept analytics cookies, measure how visitors use this site
• If you accept advertising cookies, show the Center’s events to past visitors on Facebook and Instagram

What We Share Publicly

Our Membership Directory is a public page listing current Members by name, membership tier, and the year they joined. It does not include contact information, application materials, or any other personal details.

We use the following third-party services, each with their own privacy practices:

• Givebutter (donation processing) — see Givebutter’s privacy policy
• Monday.com (Membership/Opportunities application and Contact form processing) — see Monday.com’s privacy policy
• Google Analytics (site usage analytics, only if you accept analytics cookies) — see Google’s privacy policy
• Substack (email delivery of Center research; its form loads only after you click Subscribe) — see Substack’s privacy policy
• Eventbrite (event ticketing and checkout) — see Eventbrite’s privacy policy
• Meta (advertising, only if you accept advertising cookies) — see Meta’s privacy policy

Cookies and Advertising

This site uses these cookies and similar technologies:

• Consent cookie (ljcps_consent) — remembers your choices on the banner for about 6 months, or for 12 months if you decline advertising cookies. The banner needs it to work.
• Google Analytics cookies (_ga and _ga_ followed by an ID) — measure traffic to this site. They load only if you accept analytics cookies.
• Meta Pixel cookies (_fbp, and _fbc when you arrive from a Meta ad) — load only if you accept advertising cookies. Meta uses them to recognize your browser, to measure the results of the Center’s ads, and to show the Center’s events to people who visited this site. Meta receives this information and handles it under its own privacy policy.

Services embedded in our pages, such as Givebutter, Eventbrite, Substack, and Monday.com forms, can set their own cookies. Their privacy policies describe them.

We show the banner on your first visit. You can accept all cookies, decline all cookies, or choose analytics and advertising separately. We show the banner again after about 6 months, or after 12 months if you decline advertising cookies. We also show it again if this policy changes how we use cookies. If you decline, Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel do not load.

Your Choices

• Accept or decline analytics cookies and advertising cookies on the banner, together or separately. Select Privacy Choices in the footer at any time to change your choices.
• This site treats the Global Privacy Control signal from your browser as a decline of all optional cookies. If your browser sends that signal, Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel do not load.
• Block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
• Opt out of Google Analytics with Google’s browser add-on.
• Manage the ads Meta shows you in your Meta ad preferences.
• Opt out of interest-based ads from participating companies at optout.aboutads.info.

Data Retention

Application materials — including CVs, letters of recommendation, and transcripts — may be retained beyond the initial review period, even if an application is not approved, so that Center staff can re-engage prospective Members in the future. These materials are accessible to authorized Center staff involved in membership review and cultivation.

Your Rights

California residents have the following rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

• The right to know what personal information we have collected about you
• The right to request deletion of your personal information
• The right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. The Center does not sell personal information. If you accept advertising cookies, the Center shares limited information with Meta so that it can advertise its events. California law calls this “sharing.” To opt out, decline the banner, use Privacy Choices in the footer, or send the Global Privacy Control signal. The Center honors that signal.
• The right to non-discrimination for exercising any of these rights

Children’s Privacy

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
